Curriculum and Academic Programmes

As New Zealand’s leading academic secondary school for boys,Auckland Grammar School offers a dual qualification pathway: both the New Zealand National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) and the University of Cambridge International Exams (CIE).

Subjects offered include: accounting, biology, business studies, chemistry, classical studies, economics, English, French, geography, graphics, history, history of art, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, maths (calculus and statistics), music, physics, practical art, physical education, design and technology.

Boys must be prepared to work hard and tackle the requirements of the rigorous, advanced courses on offer. In return we guarantee that we will give all boys the very best in teaching, guidance and support to ensure they achieve the highest level of success.

All international students please note that entry into courses depends on a number of factors including confirmation of prior learning and ability in your chosen subjects and at least an intermediate level of English. Students without the prerequisite level of English on arrival will be referred to the onsite high school preparation class until the required English level is reached.

Facilities

Sport is an important part of School life. AGS processes excellent sports facilities with 6 grass pitches, a water-based artificial turf for hockey, a new indoor sports centre (2006), squash courts, 3 pavilions, an existing gymnasium, heated swimming pool, a new practise turf for various sporting codes, 2 well prepared wickets for our senior cricket teams and 6 artificial turf tennis courts, all of which are located on the school site. Tibbs House is home to 120 boarders. It is located in Clive Road adjoining the School.

The School owns an outdoor education centre – Venture lodge. Located in Ohakune in the central North Island, the lodge is the focus of the School’s extensive outdoor education programme. Venture lodge is set on 4.2 hectares of land and offers students opportunities for bush walking, skiing, canoeing, rock climbing and tramping.

Information Technology (IT) equipment has a major role within the academic and administrative functions of the School. It is essential that students develop adaptability with IT equipment as IT literacy is a primary goal. There is a high level of student access to IT equipment throughout the School in computer laboratories and in key facilities such as the library, the new technology block and the multimedia theatre. In addition there is a consistent focus on staff training to maximise the effectiveness of IT as a learning tool.
